House of York

by Susan Flantzer

The House of York descended from two sons of King Edward III: in the male line from Edmund of Langley, Duke of York, the fourth surviving son of Edward III and from a female line of Lionel of Antwerp, Duke of Clarence, Edward III’s second surviving son.  These two lines came together when Anne de Mortimer, a great-granddaughter of Lionel, Duke of Clarence married Richard of Conisburgh, 3rd Earl of Cambridge, a son of Edmund of Langley, Duke of York.  Their son was Richard Plantagenet, Duke of York who led the Yorkist faction in the Wars of the Roses until his death at the Battle of Wakefield. Richard Plantagenet’s four sons were King Edward IV; Edmund, Earl of Rutland who died with his father at the Battle of Wakefield; George, Duke of Clarence; and King Richard III.
