The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, also known as the United Kingdom, is located northwest of the European mainland. The United Kingdom includes the island of Great Britain (England, Scotland, and Wales), the northeastern part of the island of Ireland (Northern Ireland), and many smaller islands. Northern Ireland is the only part of the United Kingdom that shares a border with another country, the Republic of Ireland.

Over the centuries, the land that encompasses the United Kingdom and the rulers who reigned in that land have had a long and complicated history.
