Younger Children of Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark: Princess Isabella, Prince Vincent, Princess Josephine

by Susan Flantzer

Besides Prince Christian, who is second in line to the Danish throne, Crown Prince Frederik has three other children who are numbers three thru five in the line of succession. Denmark changed its succession law in 2008 to absolute primogeniture where the succession passes to the eldest child of the sovereign regardless of gender. Males and females have equal succession rights. This means that Crown Prince Frederik’s second born child, Isabella, is ahead of her younger brother Vincent in the line of succession.

Princess Isabella was born on April 21, 2007 at the Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen, Denmark. She is the second child and the elder daughter of Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark and his Australian wife Crown Princess Mary (née Mary Donaldson).  Princess Isabella was the first girl born into the Danish Royal Family since the birth of her great aunt Anne-Marie, the wife of former King Constantine of Greece, in 1946.

Princess Isabella was christened in the chapel at Fredensborg Palace on July 1, 2007. She was given the names:

  • Isabella: a form of Elizabeth which is her mother’s middle, also name possibly after Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom who has the same birthday, or possibly after Isabella of Austria, wife of King Christian II of Denmark
  • Henrietta: after her maternal grandmother Henrietta Donaldson
  • Ingrid: after her paternal great grandmother, Ingrid of Sweden, wife of King Frederik IX of Denmark
  • Margrethe: after her paternal grandmother Queen Margrethe II of Denmark
