I don't know what this man is thinking. Yes, he can burn the Koran. No, he shouldn't. I hope that he gets no attention from the media. Isn't there an important ball game at the time he wants to do his burning?

He's been on the noon news here and says he has been getting death threats. That's just what we need! A shoot-out!

Carolyn
Carolyn, he's already getting oodles of media attention, as well as the attention of the U.S. government. Not to mention some Muslims have already burned him in effigy. He's caused quite a stir. Gen. Petraeus has even said he could cause harm to our troops in Afghanistan and Iraq, but this minister doesn't care. A reporter asked him if he truly believes Jesus would tell him to burn the Koran, he said yes, he truly believes he would. He said, "When do we stop backing down?" :S

Cindy

Its a shame people like this pastor & his followers can't be locked up .

They do more harm than good .

I just hope there are no repercussions against American civillians or troops .

Today's pre-trial hearing for Raymond Clark was switched from this afternoon to 10am this morning. Clark did not attend.
It's been reported that his attorneys met with prosecutors.
The Hartford Courant also reported that 'they will be back in court at the end of the month.'

If true, this will be unusual. Clark's pre-trial hearings have been limited to one per month for some time now. The Court Docket will not be updated to indicate the next hearing date for this case until tomorrow.

Regarding reports that Annie Le's family is considering filing suit against Yale University for negligence in her death, Yale spokesman Tom Conroy said in a statement, " Yale University has not been notified of any legal action or planned legal action. The Yale community continues to offer support to Annie's family and friends."

For more information on the possible lawsuit by the Le family, see my two previous posts.

With all the attention he's getting now, he'll get even more once he and the 15 members of his church burn the Koran. The only good thing is that all the attention will be condemning him.

Heels weren't the problem when I was 14! It was the nylons with a seam up the back that was always crooked! And the garter belts we wore to keep them up! Now I see them in black and as sexy items in Victoria's Secret ads. They certainly weren't glamorous back then! :-D

Carolyn
I started wearing nylons right at the very tail end of the seamed ones. I'm not sure I ever wore them, to be honest. I remember the early pantyhose which always sagged at the knees. It was a few years before they started adding spandex or whatever they added to make the nylons tight and non-saggy.

Donald, you can get confused about one date as easily as you can a dozen dates. I've met people, talked with people, spent time with them, visited them, but I sure couldn't pinpoint exact dates for a lot of them. I have trouble pinpointing the dates some photos were taken, though I have hints of hair styles, backgrounds, clothing, etc.

Diana didn't have to reveal any "details" to Blair. Dodi Fayed was known to be a womanizer and a drug addict. Just knowing her name to be connected with Dodi's could cause Blair to caution her.

As for looking carefully at memories, that could be applied to any autobiography, as well as just plain ole' folk that we have in our lives. Memories are not perfect, but I'll bet conversations are more memorable than dates unless the date is 9-11 or the day JFK was assassinated or (for some) the day John Lennon was killed.

A friend of mine recently attended a private lecture by Sally Bedell Smith. She spoke about the various biographies she has written---I have her books on Pamela Digby Churchill Hayward Harriman and Diana. She said she has been spending time in London and interviewing people. The book is to be completed in 2012.

She said that she spends a lot of time reading about a subject and then does interviews. She gathers much more information than she can possibly use once she begins writing.

September 8, 1299 - Wedding of Edward I of England & Margaret of France

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Margaret_of_France_(died_1318)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edmund_of_Woodstock,_1st_Earl_of_Kent

Edward was the son of Henry III of England and Eleanor of Provence. Margaret was the daughter of Philip III of France and his second wife, Marie of Brabant. Edward had originally hoped to marry Margaret's sister, Blanche. Blanche was instead married to Rudolf III of Germany, after which time Edward declared war on France. After five years, the 61 year old Edward married 16 year old Margaret, receiving new territories and several thousand pounds in payment. Despite their difference in age, Margaret and Edward enjoyed a very happy marriage, as Edward had with his first wife, Eleanor of Castile. The couple had two sons, Thomas and Edmund. Their daughter Eleanor died in childhood.

September 8, 1881 - Death of Frederick of the Netherlands

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prince_Frederick_of_the_Netherlands

Frederick was the second son of William I of the Netherlands and Wilhelmine of Prussia. His elder brother was William II of the Netherlands. Frederick was raised entirely in Germany (at the court of his grandfather, Frederick William II and later his uncle, Frederick William III) and did not set foot in the Netherlands until he was sixteen. Frederick fought during Napoleon's Hundred Days and later founded the Dutch military academy in Breda. Frederick refused the Greek throne in 1829, but later became Inspector-General of the Dutch army under William III. Frederick married his first cousin, Louise of Prussia, and two sons (neither of whom survived childhood) and two daughters, one of whom (Louise) later became Queen of Sweden. Frederick's descendents currently sit on the Danish, Belgian, and Luxembourgish thrones.

:-D Good point, jsg, I hadn't thought about that. No, neither Christian nor Victoria were personally responsible for siring their grandchildren! And in Louise's case, her claim to the Danish throne was a bit better than that of her husband. While neither were the clear-cut heir (there really wasn't one), their claims together AND the fact that they had good reputations and scads of kids helped Christian be named as heir to the Danish throne.

Albert didn't do the same for Victoria in terms of her right to the crown, but he certainly did wonders for the reputation, finances, and scope of the monarchy.

This isn't the first time, but I've thought again of what would have happened if Charles had married Camilla when they first considered it many years ago?

There would have been no Diana and no William or Harry. This forum would be very different if it existed at all.

Diana was a spirit of openness and youth and brought some light to the British Royal Family. That it ended so badly is so sad.

It's my favorite, too! All the threads that would form the tapestry that was to be her life already are apparent -- her royal status and bearing, her intelligence and education, her Protestant religion, her self-possession and calm (that would serve her especially well during her incarceration at the Tower a few years hence), along with an expression of uncertainty - even indecivensess, and her lavish clothing. Baudouin was the eldest son of Leopold III and Astrid of Sweden. Baudouin became King of the Belgians after his father’s abdication in 1951. Baudouin married Dona Fabiola Fernanda Maria de las Victorias Antonia Adelaida de Mora y Aragon in 1960, but the couple had no surviving children. Belgian Congo was granted its independence during Baudouin’s reign. Baudouin was a popular king, reigning 42 years before his death in 1993. He was succeeded by his younger brother, the current king Albert II.

So because the main Baden male line was in the process of dying out, Leopold, his brothers, and their children (product of a morganatic line) were given succession rights in Baden. Before that, however, Bavaria was set to add Baden to their lands as the queen of Bavaria (Caroline of Baden, mother of two queens of Saxony, a queen of Prussia, and grandmother to every other royal and their cat at that time) was the next in line after the main male line died out. But that didn't happen as Leopold inherited the grand duchy after all.

So my question is - how did Bavaria respond to this? There was a treaty between Bavaria and Baden that secured this transfer of Baden. I can imagine Bavaria would have just taken into stride that Baden suddenly found a solution to their succession problem. But I can't find anything explaining how Bavaria reacted the Baden essentially breaking a treaty. Does anyone know?

Elisabeth was the sister of Aribert of Anhalt, who was very unhappily married to Marie Louise of Schleswig-Holstein. Elisabeth was also the mother of Marie of Mecklenberg, who had an illegitimate child with a servant in 1898, leading Queen Victoria to believe Marie had been drugged, and the future George V to remark that she must have been hypnotized. Elisabeth and her husband shunned Marie, while Elisabeth's mother in law Augusta of Cambridge took Marie and her baby into her care.

Marie married a count, whom she later divorced, and after that married Julius Ernst of Lippe-Biesterfeld (uncle of Bernhard, prince consort of the Netherlands). One of Marie's and Julius's children, Elisabeth, is still alive at the age of 94.

Christina was the daughter of Ernest, Elector of Saxony and Elisabeth of Bavaria-Munich. Hans (John) was the son of Christian I of Denmark and Dorothea of Brandenburg. The couple became King and Queen of Denmark and Norway in 1481, and of Sweden in 1497. The couple had an unhappy marriage made worse by Hans's affair with one of Christina's ladies-in-waiting. Christina served as regent in Sweden in the early 1500s; she was held ransom for about a year after Sweden rebelled against Danish rule. Christina returned to Denmark after her release, but the couple lived apart after this time. Hans and Christina were parents of three sons, the future Christina II, Franciscus, and Knud, and a daughter, Elizabeth, the future Electress of Brandenberg.

September 7, 1534 - Wedding of Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk, and Lady Catherine Willoughby
Charles Brandon was the best friend of Henry VIII and the widower of his sister Mary. The marriage to Catherine Willoughby, Charles' ward and 35 years his junior, was a bit of a scandal.

I'm sure there's a perfectly good explanation (for her not being there, not for me not remembering!), but still, I remember noticing Ann's husband Tim but never thought of Camilla at all!

Hugh Lindsay! That's the name! Thanks Breffney!

I can't remember if I read, or heard (or both probably!) that Diana changed her socialising lifestyle after that, concentrating on the charities clamouring for her patronage.

Trivia learned in the documentary ... the leg used in the advertisement poster for The Graduate was not Anne Bancroft's leg. The producers didn't think she had quite the right "shapeliness", so Linda Gray's leg was used.

I heard an earthquake "expert" talking about this last night. He had been in Christchurch several years ago and said the buildings are well constructed. Great loss of life was prevented because most folks were home in bed when it happened and not out and about.

There were several small earthquakes near Oklahoma City last week, too. Not enough to do any damage, but in an unusual location.

They didn't know they had been nominated, or even consented to be nominated. And worse, they can't get off the ballot--they can only ask people NOT to vote for them.

The National Householder Party (who nominated them) has aboliltion of property taxes on their platform.

Margaret was originally betrothed to John's older brother, the mentally disabled Henry IV, who was deposed in John's favor. John's sister Marie also married Margaret's brother, the future Philip III of France. Margaret gave birth to the couple's only a child, a son, in 1271. Neither the child nor Margaret survived the birth. John later remarried to Margaret of Flanders and had four children.

It was Juliana's great-granddaughter, Louise of Hesse-Kassel, who brought Juliana's descendants to the Danish throne. Louise was the granddaughter of Juliana's only child Frederick. Upon marrying Christian of Schleswig-Holstein (who was a distant cousin with a similar claim to the Danish throne), the couple became very attractive as possible successors to the childless Frederick VII. As the Danish throne had a huge dearth of clear cut contenders at the time, Louise's mother and elder siblings passed their claim onto Louise. Hence, more than 100 years after she started, Juliana's descendents came to the throne of Denmark!

Pedro was the son of Pedro I of Brazil and Empress Maria Leopoldina. Teresa Cristina was the daughter of Francis I of the Two Sicilies and Maria Isabella of Spain. The marriage was arranged by Pedro's regents in order to encourage maturity and stability. Pedro was sent a portrait of Teresa Cristina as a beautiful young woman, but when she arrived in Brazil, he was dismayed at her ordinary appearance. The couple later became very devoted due to their cultural interests, and were married for 46 years. The marriage produced two sons (Alfonso and Pedro, both of whom died young) and two daughters, Isabel and Leopoldina. The couple were the last imperial rulers of Brazil.

Besides teaching and designing eventing courses, Mark Phillips has, since 1992, served as the Chef d'Equipe (that's what a manager of a national team is called in eventing) and Technical Advisor of the US Eventing Team.

To date, Phillips has led the Eventing Team to 23 Team and Individual medals, including Silver and Individual Bronze at the 1996 Olympic Games, Team Bronze and Individual Gold at the 2000 Olympic Games, Team Bronze and Individual Silver at the 2004 Olympic Games and Individual Silver at the 2008 Olympic Games. His teams also won Team Gold at the Pan American Games in 1999, 2003 and 2007 and Team Gold at the 2002 World Equestrian Games.

Obviously at that age I didn't know my French history very well.

I would love to get my hands on that film ( a European version) now so that I could fully appreciate the story and see if I could spot any glaring inaccuracies. :)

And there's such a big argument about off-shore drilling going on at our local newspaper's forum, I finally left the forum over two weeks ago because I couldn't handle the name-calling and mud-slinging at those who don't believe it's safe. I wonder what the people who declared that it's safe are thinking now. They were convinced that after the BP oil leak, everyone would be so extra careful, nothing bad could ever happen again.

The Connecticut mother, who was killed in the home invasion a couple of years ago, had MS although she was continuing to work as a school nurse. Her daughters, also murdered with her, were active in raising money for MS. The friends and neighbors are carrying on in their memory and have events now and then.

The victims were Jennifer Hawke-Pettit, 48, and daughters Hayley, 17 and Michaela, 11.

September 1, 1067 - Death of Baldwin V, Count of Flanders

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baldwin_V_of_Flanders

Baldwin was born in 1012, the son of Baldwin IV and Ogive of Luxembourg. Baldwin married Adele of France, daughter of Robert II of France in 1028. He rebelled against his father in 1030, but later made amends. Baldwin succeeded his father in 1035, after which time he became a considerable power in medieval Europe. He received and hosted Emma of England in Bruges during her exile; during Baldwin's reign, Bruges was a cultural and artistic center. From 1060-7 Baldwin was co-regent of France (with Anne of Kiev) for Philip I of France, his nephew by marriage. Baldwin married his daughter Matilda to William the Conqueror, with whom Baldwin enjoyed good relations. Baldwin also may have helped negotiate Edward Aethling's return to England from Hungary.

I can't remember the exact details. IIRC they resided in Russia prior to World War I and was on Russia's side. (But I might be mistaken)

I'm confused. If the current Mecklenburg-Schwerin claimants are descendents of the Mecklenburg-Strelitz family, then why did Frederick Franz serve as regent when Charles Michael (the heir presumptive) was fighting in WWI and wished to abdicate? Charles Michael named one of the Carlows as his heir later, but was there no acceptance in 1918 for this?
