Nikolaus is the son of Prince Franz Josef II of Liechtenstein and the brother of Prince Hans-Adam II of Liechtenstein. Margaretha is the daughter of Grand Duke Jean of Luxembourg as well as the sister of Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg. Their marriage would be the last between two reigning royal houses in Europe.
