What are the current laws of succession?
The Jordanian throne is inherited by the descendants of King Abdullah I, the first king of Jordan and the great-grandfather of the present king, through the direct line of his male heirs. King Abdullah II named his eldest son Prince Hussein as Crown Prince on July 2, 2009.

What is the Jordanian Royal Family’s last name?
Members of the Jordanian Royal Family belong to the Hashemite family.  The Hashemite family traces their origins back to Hashim ibn Abd al-Manaf, the great-grandfather of the Islamic prophet Muhammad.

How long has there been a monarchy in Jordan?
In 1921, the British created the sons of Sayyid Hussein bin Ali, the Sharif of Mecca, Emir of Mecca and King of Hejaz, emirs of Iraq and Jordan under British protectorate.   Abdullah bin al-Hussein became Emir of Transjordan and his brother Faisal bin Al Hussein became Emir of Iraq.  After negotiations with the British, the Emirate of Transjordan became independent on May 25, 1946 and Emir Abdullah became king of the new Hashemite Kingdom of Transjordan.  In 1949, the kingdom was renamed the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.

What does the Jordanian flag mean?
Jordan’s flag is symbolic of the Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Empire during World War I. The flag has black, white, and green horizontal stripes and on the left, a red triangle with a seven-pointed star.  The colored stripes stand for the Abbasid, Umayyad and Fatimid Caliphates and the red triangle stands for the Hashemite dynasty.  The seven pointed star stands for the seven verses of the first surah in the Qur'an and for the unity of the Arab peoples.

Have any Jordanian royals become consorts of monarchs?
Princess Haya bint Hussein, the daughter of King Hussein and his third wife Queen Alia, married Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Emir of Dubai in 2004.  Princess Haya is his junior wife.
