Currently, only males can succeed to the Chrysanthemum Throne. 

The current order of succession is:

1. HIH Prince Naruhito, Crown Prince of Japan (1960) - eldest son of HIM Emperor Akihito
2. HIH Prince Akishino (Fumihito) (1965) - second son of HIM Emperor Akihito
3. HIH Prince Hisahito of Akishino (2006) - son of Prince Akishino
4. HIH Prince Hitachi (Masahito) (1935) - younger brother of HIM Emperor Akihito
5. HIH Prince Mikasa (Takahito) (1915) - uncle of the current Emperor, brother of Hirohito
6. HIH Prince Tomohito of Mikasa (1946) - eldest son of Prince Mikasa
7. HIH Prince Katsura (Yoshihito) (1948) - younger son of Prince Mikasa
