As of January 1st 2012 Deven Mercer (DKM on the forum) will become the new owner of Unofficial Royalty. We are now in the process of setting up the move. Should this result in unavailability of (parts of) the site, we will let you know. It has been a great pleasure for me to set up the site almost 17 years ago and I am very pleased to hand it over to somebody who has been part of the website since the very beginning!
Kind regards,
Geraldine |

According to Lady Pamela Hicks – the cousin of Prince Philip and Lady-in-Waiting to Princess Elizabeth at the time – those were the words uttered by the new Queen as she looked out of the airplane window right after they landed in London in February 1952. Her Majesty was referring to the polished black royal limousines that had been sent to pick them up. Moments later she descended the steps to greet her Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, and his colleagues in government waiting to receive her home.
One of my treasures, found in a used book shop years ago, is the Daily Graphic’s Royal Family Picture Annual: Volume One, with photographs beginning in August 1951 and going through July 1952… spanning the last few months of the...

Saturday, 10 December 2011, marks the seventy-fifth anniversary of the abdication of King Edward VIII (the Duke of Windsor), and the accession of King George VI. It also marks another “jubilee” of sorts for Queen Elizabeth II, who at age ten-and-a-half years became Heiress Presumptive to the British throne. (In the style of the time a woman could not be “Heir Apparent”.) Given the lingering trauma and painful memories of those days the Queen and her family are taking no official note of the anniversary, yet in many ways it marks the true beginning of the story of the current reign, which it did so much to shape.
The old tale of the King who gave up the throne “for the woman I love” took a new twist this year, as research...

January, August, and September are always somewhat difficult months when pondering what to write about the British royals. Those are the months when they have pretty well gone to ground either at Sandringham (from Christmas to Accession Day) or Balmoral. As I was wracking my brain thinking about what to write this month I was asked a question over breakfast about the upcoming Diamond Jubilee, and it set me to work on some figuring.
The question was, “How many British kings or queens have had a Diamond Jubilee?” My immediate response was, “Two. George III and Victoria.” But then I vaguely recalled that George III did not complete his 60th year on the throne. Out came the book with the dates I needed, and a scrap...

I saw a week or so ago that The Earl of Wessex’s television production company has now been liquidated. While the undertaking never took off in the way that Prince Edward had hoped, I am actually thankful for the often much-maligned series of programs that he made on various royal topics during the time that the company was in business. (Who else, after all, could have had such access?) I truly enjoyed the “Crown & Country” series, and productions such as “Edward on Edward.” One of my regrets is to never have secured a copy, or even seen, “Windsor Restored.” Once one grants that such programs were made with a clear bias from the perspective of the current royal family, they are quite informative and well...

Back in February I wrote on the reports that Prince William and Catherine were rumored to be planning to live at Kensington Palace when in London. Those rumors have proven true, though not quite in the way anticipated at the time. For their short-term London accommodation they have been given the tiny Nottingham Cottage in the rather more modest complex adjoining “KP” proper, literally right across the lane from Princess Diana’s old apartment. (See: http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2011/06/14/article-2003249-0C8C757000000578-320_964x821.jpg )
After a bit of a fix-up the newlyweds have moved their things into the modest four room and one bath “starter” home. They are said to be slightly unhappy with a lack of privacy...
