Belgian Monarchs

Leopold I, the first King of the Belgians

Belgium has been a monarchy since 1831, a year after independence from The Netherlands was declared.  The Belgian National Congress asked Prince Leopold of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha to be the first King of the Belgians.  King Leopold I was the uncle of both Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom and her husband Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.
